The Hawley Fox Combo in 1966

waldock9-7-2008

The Hawkley Fox Combo, were formed when Larry Nicholas left the J Crow Combo in the 1960's. Playing a on Farfisa organ (with footpedals) he linked up with Derek Thirlwell (guitar) and Jim Hickey (drums) and we played as a trio.
The name "Hawkley Fox Combo" was derived when we were calling someone about a booking and were using a public 'phone box.
When we were asked what our name was, I noticed the STD code list on the phone box wall and saw "Hawkley"
( a place near Midhurst, and so the name "Hawkley Fox" was born. We were a bit different in that we wore smart gear and bow ties, even though we played anything, including group numbers like "green onions" and "walkin' the dog" plus rock.
In this Photo taken in 1977 at the Magpie Pub in Fratton Road, the line-up has changed.

hot-rods-5

The Hot Rods

The group s name (late 50s/early 60s) The Hot Rods but they seem to have had loads of members. The drummer is indeed Jim Lawrence and while The Barnsley Brothers the twins are fondly remembered as the men who started and ran BASINS in the 1980s. Mick was one of the Brothers.
So, these (as above) are the HOT RODs too at least one incarnation. many people passed through their ranks and I can only name three for certain here: (L-R) Tony Nabbaro gtr/harmonica, George East (gtr), Jim Lawrence drums, bass player who may be Colin Wilkinson? Sean Conlan, Johnny Witt drums, Ricky Cripps, Colin Quaintance guitar.
(Check out those speakers)
George was the licencee at the Leopold Pub in Albert Road, then went to France and wrote a few books about his time there.
Most recently living on the Isle of Wight.
Other members included;- Danny Raven, David Quinton and Colin Wood (Renegades, Strollers, J Crow Combo)
